Blue Gold Indigo Dye Kit

$55.00

Kits will ship on September 1st..

Indigo species are the world's only source of natural, true, colorfast blue. A magical dyestuff that has been used around the world as a dye since pre-historic times. In this kit, we are offering you the Guatemalan indigo (Indigofera suffruticosa) grown near Charleston SC. Each year, we extract pounds of indigo from the plant, the same way it was done in the 1700s, fermentation style.

Indigo cannot be dyed in the same way as other dyes. It must be used to create a "living" vat, which is achieved through a sort of fermentation process (see recipe in the box).

This kit contains the pre-measured ingredients to create one vat, with which you can dye quite a bit of fibre, about 10yds of fabric. You have to know that a cotton t-shirt fabric will absorb a lot more dye than a silk scarf. So if you want to dye a lot of different things a dark shade of indigo, make sure you chose lighter, thinner fabrics and not just t-shirts. It will deplete your dye vat pretty quickly. Indigo can be used to dye any natural fibres, not synthetics: cotton, linen, wool, silk, bamboo, rayon, hemp, etc.

Included in the kit are: 2 oz of dye pigment, 2 oz of pickling lime, 1.5 oz of sodium hydro-sulfate, my book with instructions. You will need: kitchen gloves, a quart jar, a 3 or 4 gallon stainless steel pot with a lid, warm water to the touch and your fabric.

The indigo is extracted from our 2024 plants.
